The Family of Robert Stockwell and
Mary Ann Stonell

Robert Stockwell, b. 2 September 1857 at Bledlow. He married twice:
1. Mary Ann Stonell b. 30 July 1853; d. 20 January 1913. They married on 24 November 1876 at Zion Hill Baptist Chapel, Courland Grove, Clapham, Surrey. They had 9 children:
a. Robert Ernest Stockwell, b. 9 November 1877 at 10 St Philip Cottages, Philip Street, Battersea, Surrey; m. Daisy Olive Stevens on 9 February 1909 at Fulham Register Office, Fulham, Middlesex; d. 1943 in Blackall, Queensland, Australia.
b. Florence Alice Stockwell, b. 17 February 1879. She never married.
c. Frederick Reginald Stockwell, b. 21 December 1880 at 17 Willington Road, Stockwell, Surrey; m. (1) Annie Louisa Beach on 13 March 1903 at Surrey Tabernacle, Wansey Street, Bermondsey, Surrey; (2) Elizabeth Anne Cooke on 30 January 1945 at Sutton Baptist Church, Sutton, Surrey; d. 22 February 1956 at 13 Quarry Park Road. Cheam, Surrey.
d. Frank Stockwell, b. 2 May 1885 in Southwark, Surrey. He married and had 2 sons, William and Gordon; d. 21 November 1947 in Weir Hospital, Wandsworth, London.
e. Ann Jessie Stockwell, b. 9 April 1886 in Walworth, Surrey; d. 8 January 1954 at Bolingbroke Hospital, Battersea, London.
f. Emily Mary Stockwell, b. 9 April 1887 in Camberwell, Surrey.
g. Ruth Stockwell, b. 10 August 1889 in Camberwell, Surrey; m. Roland Tapsfield on 30 May 1917. We have no further information about their family.
h. Daisy Martha Stockwell, b. 16 November 1891. She married but we have no further information about her family.
i. Gertrude Stockwell, b. 10 August 1893; m. Hugh Walker in 1923; d. 18 November 1974. They had one son, Brian Walker.
2. Sarah Lawrence (nee Boulden), b. 13 June 1859; They married on 2 October 1914 at Surrey Tabernacle, Wansey Street, Bermondsey, Surrey. Sarah was a widow having married Joseph Berry Lawrence (1848 – 1911) at St John the Evangelist Church, Bexley, Kent on 19 Sep 1883. Sarah died on 15 May 1939 at 26 Wavertree Road, Streatham, Surrey.
Robert died in Bromley Road, Catford on 9 August 1922. He and his wife had been visiting relatives in Kent and were returning in their motor car when he was taken ill and died.
Robert was the son of James Stockwell (1812 - 1870) and Martha Oldham (1822 - 1865). James had 1 daughter by his first wife and 7 children by Martha and 1 daughter by his third wife. For more information about James and Martha see Barbara Lupton's website (go there now).
Mary Ann Stonell was the daughter of Thomas Stonell and Mary Ann Root. She was born on 30 July 1853 at 32 Sussex Road, Brixton, Surrey. Thomas Stonell was a baker who was born in 1819 in Brixton, Surrey. Mary Ann Root was born in 1815 in Maplestead, Essex. Mary Ann Stockwell (Stonell) died on 20 January 1913 at 76 Victoria Road, Clapham, Surrey.
Sarah was the daughter of Albert Boulden (1822 – c1890) and Elizabeth Sarah Williams (1829 – 1914). Albert and Elizabeth had 4 children.
Robert Stockwell came from Buckinghamshire to South London in about 1870. He lived at Herne Hill, South London at first. At the time of his marriage to Mary Ann Stonell he is described as a Printer's Reader and as living at 76 Dalzell Road, Stockwell, Surrey.
On 10 May 1884 his uncle (John Oldham) wrote to him. The letter was sent from Merton Lodge, Wallingford. John comments on his sudden illness which came on "a fortnight ago" and which resulting in the doctor telling him to be "very carefull & keep myself quiet, etc.etc." But he still hoped to be at Pangbourne [Congregational Church] tomorrow.
By 23 January 1893 Robert had moved to 26 Grosvenor Terrace, Camberwell as his brother (John - the grocer in Reading) wrote there on the occasion of John's wife's death. John's wife (Ann Coker) was only 45 years old when she died. John hopes that Robert and Pollie will come to the funeral, and mentions that Pattie has just come down.
